- ³⁴Then the Lord said to Moses, “Take fragrant spices—gum resin, onycha and galbanum—and pure frankincense, all in equal amounts, ³⁵and make a fragrant blend of incense, the work of a perfumer. It is to be salted and pure and sacred. ³⁶Grind some of it to powder and place it in front of the ark of the covenant law in the tent of meeting, where I will meet with you. - Rabbi Steinberg further states that the Talmud, in Huriot 12A, also describes that the Prophet Jeremiah foresaw that the Exile was imminent and that certain vessels had to be protected and hidden away for future generations. Jeremiah ordered King Josiah to hide the Ark of the Covenant, along with other items including the bottle of Anointing Oil, Aaron’s Staff and the Chest sent by the Pelishtim (Phillistines).

Pulpit Commentary
Verses 26-29 – Thou shalt anoint the tabernacle. The first application of the holy oil was to be to the inanimate objects constituting the paraphernalia of worship – viz.,
1. The tabernacle itself as a whole;
2. The furniture of the holy of holies – the ark and mercy seat;
3. The furniture of the holy place – the show-bread table, the candlestick, and the altar of incense; and
4. The furniture of the court – the altar of burnt-offering, and the laver. After applying the oil to these, Moses was to proceed to the anointing of the priests. (Compare Leviticus 8:10-12.)

Frankincense, Incense and The Anointing Oil
- Frankincense was an ingredient in the holy incense (Exodus 30:34-38)
  The altar of incense was made of acacia wood and overlaid with pure gold. It was situated in the Holy Place near the curtain before the Most Holy Place (see Layout Of Solomon’s Temple). The high priest burned incense when he tended the lamps (Exodus 30:1-9).
  Once per year, on The Day Of Atonement, the High the priest entered The Most Holy Place and burned incense there before The Ark Of The Covenant which contained The Ten Commandments (Leviticus 16:12-13).

Mary Magdalene, First Witness the Resurrection
Mary Magdalene is mentioned in the Gospels as being among the women of Galilee who followed Jesus and His disciples, and who was present at His Crucifixion and Burial, and

who went to the tomb on Easter Sunday to anoint His body. She was the first to see the Risen Lord, and to announce His Resurrection to the apostles.

The “Anointed” One ~ Christ

Christ = Christos = Anointed

The followers of Jesus became known as Christians (as in Acts 11:26) because they believed Jesus to be the Christós – Anointed One.

Jesus came to be called “Jesus Christ”, meaning “Jesus the Christós” (i.e. Jesus, the anointed; or “Jesus, the Messiah” by his followers) after his death and believed resurrection.

The noun χρισμα (chrisma), meaning an anointing or the anointed. This noun is used to indicate the anointing oil (Exodus 29:7) and the Anointed One (Daniel 9:26) and in 1 John 2:20 it indicates the state of being anointed (in the Holy Spirit).

The English chrism derives from Koine Greek via Latin and Old French. In Greek, khrîsma (χρῖσμα) was originally the present participle (“anointing”) of χρίειν (“anoint“).^[1] By extension, along with khrîma (χρῖμα), khrîstai (χρῖσται), and later khrísma (χρίσμα), it came to be used for the anointing oil or ointment itself.

Holy Ampulla or Holy Ampoule (Sainte Ampoule in French) was a glass vial which held the chrism or anointing oil for the coronation of the kings and queens.

The Anointing Oil of Easter Morning

Mary Salome: Let us go to buy myrrh and rich spices so that we can do honour to his body.

THE SPICES AND THE VISITS TO CHRIST’S TOMB – myrrh and aloes

The first person of all of them to see living proof of the resurrection miracle was Saint Mary Magdalene, the Bible says. But before Mary saw Jesus, she saw some angels who helped her process what had happened.

Mary went to the tomb early on the first Easter morning with some other women to anoint Jesus’ body with spices…

Gospel accounts testify that early on the Sunday morning following Jesus’ crucifixion, Mary Magdalene traveled to the tomb of Jesus to anoint his body. Upon reaching the tomb, an earthquake shook the ground; the stone was moved from the tomb, and a holy messenger announced that Jesus had risen from the dead. Mary Magdalene’s encounter has, since the 2nd century, been celebrated as Easter. The Resurrection is described as having occurred c. 30 CE.
